Adobe Celebrates, But Will Flash Developers Return to Apple?

Recommended by elsterama on September 10, 2010 via ReadWriteWeb

Last April, Apple changed its developers terms of service to restrict the use of third-party development tools in creating apps for iOS, the operating system behind the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. The restrictions essentially banned the use of Adobe's Packager for iPhone, which allowed the creation of apps using Adobe Flash. Yesterday, Apple relaxed those restrictions and today Adobe is calling Apple's move "Great News for Developers".Continue

Apple Says "We Have Enough Fart Apps," Here's Why That's Wrong

Recommended by elsterama on September 10, 2010 via ReadWriteWeb

Earlier this week, Apple announced it was rolling back previous restrictions on the use of third-party development tools for building applications for the iOS mobile operating system and that it would be, for the first time ever, publishing its once-secret "App Store Guidelines" for all to read. These guidelines explain, in detail, how Apple determines which apps are granted acceptance into its ever-growing iTunes Application Store, now home to around 250,000 mobile apps. Continue

Today, Apple announced it is relaxing the previous restrictions on the use of third-party development tools for the creation of mobile applications on iOS, the operating system that powers the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch. Specifically, sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 of the iOS Developer Program have been modified with new language that rolls back some of the changes that were enacted earlier this year.

iPhone Apps Overtaking Songs in Terms of Total Downloads

Recommended by elsterama on September 8, 2010 via ReadWriteWeb

There's an interesting chart making its way around the net this morning comparing the number of iTunes app downloads to the total downloads of songs. The surprising reveal is that it shows apps are being downloaded much more rapidly than songs. In only 2.2 years, the iTunes App Store has reached the same total downloads as the iTunes Music Store did after 5 years. And before the year is out, the two curves on the chart will be around the same height - 13 billion downloads each.

Why is this happening? Why are apps becoming more popular than music? Continue

Apple to Launch Social Networks for Music and Games — What Are Its Bigger Social Ambitions?

Recommended by elsterama on September 1, 2010 via Inside Facebook

In a series of announcements today at a press event in San Francisco, Apple made clear that it is planning to build its own social networking features. But how big are its social aspirations? The new version of Apple’s iOS software, 4.1, is due out next week, and it will include the Game Center, a social network service designed specifically for mobile games. That’s been in the works for awhile, and is relatively simple — more surprising is Ping, Apple’s new music social network, designed for iTunes.Continue
